Talis Management Group, Inc was formed in 1991 by a merger of two leading Triangle community association management firms, Ross Taylor Management, Inc. and Southlantic Management, Inc.
Southlantic was incorporated in 1982 and was involved with both association and apartment rental management. The company's primary focus was townhomes, condominiums and apartment communities (attached housing).
Ross Taylor was formed in 1985 and concentrated on single family (detached) association management an
d developer consultation for newly planned communities.
The Association Management profession was still in its infancy and the principals of these two companies sensed a growing need to provide professional services to this growing segment of the real estate market. Because of the specialized skills needed to deal effectively with associations, a merger was planned and completed in 1991. It was a core belief that emphasis on professional development of associates within the firm was essential. Therefore, the principals were instrumental in setting up the Carolinas Chapter of Community Association’s Institute, (CAI).
Velvet served as President of the chapter for the first two terms and David served one term as President in 1993. Talis Management Group is one of only 130 nationally accredited management firms in the country.
Talis managers are referred to as Community Managers as opposed to Property Managers because of the major difference in job goals. A property manager’s goal is to “maximize income and minimize expenses”. A Community Manager's goal is to maintain and enhance the valuations of a community. There is a major difference in the skills requirement between the two. Property managers have a Landlord/Tenant focus while Community Managers must be more inclusive in their management styles.
Often we are asked how the name Talis was arrived upon for the new company. At the 1991 National conference in Washington, D.C. the theme was …”Capitalizing on the Future”. This was certainly our intent by merging two companies with complementing management skills of “attached and “detached” housing. Our thoughts were “taliz” could be changed to Talus, a reference to Taylor and Us. Talus was contemplated until we looked it up in the dictionary and read the definition…”sludge at the bottom of the hill”!!! Needless to say we decided the Talis alternative was far superior and were encouraged by Talisman being defined as lucky charm.
Today we have the privilege of serving over 140 communities throughout the Triangle representing over 30,000 homes.
We welcome the opportunity to serve your community!
